We have tried a lot of delicious bourbon-laced candies in our day, but none can compare to Dad’s Bourbon Balls. Frankly, I had never even heard of this product until I recently saw their display ad in a Bourbon trade publication. I reached out to Mike Aldy (aka the “Son of Dad”) and Mike kindly sent us a container of 16 bourbon balls to sample. The box hit our FL mailbox today and I wasted no time in tearing open the box, which encased an attractive circular gold tin.

When I bit into the first pecan-topped candy, my mouth literally exploded in pure bourbon bliss. My main gripe with most bourbon candies and/or cakes is that the bourbon flavor is either too faint or too artificial. This is not a problem whatsoever with Dad’s fine product. They use only 90 proof premium KY bourbon (our order was made with Makers Mark) and the quality shines through loud and clear in each bite. Now listen, this is the best — I repeat — the best bourbon ball you will likely ever taste. I really can’t imagine anything topping this. Equaling this? Maybe, but doubtful. Topping this? I just can’t see that happening. But be careful, these babies are seriously potent and you may be buzzing after popping 2 or 3 of these delectable candies. So why fight it? Treat yourself to a little bit of the Bluegrass State and you’ll soon be floating around in Blue Heaven.

In 1912, Howard Campbell, founder of Standard Candy Company, had a dilemma. He had just invented America’s first “combination candy bar” – a delicious concoction of caramel, marshmallow and roasted peanuts, hand coated with rich milk chocolate in an unusual round shape …

And he didn’t know what to call it. A friend suggested the name Goo Goo as it described the rich, chewy consistency of the candy bar and because “It’s so good, people will ask for it from birth.”

Today, the great taste, unique shape and name of the Goo Goo Cluster and related products are an American Tradition and Howard Campbell’s dilemma is your delight.

Those of you who grew up in and around the Nashville area will certainly be familiar with the almighty Goo Goo Cluster. If your taste buds haven’t yet met a Goo Goo, you are really in for a treat. So why delay the inevitable any longer? It’s simply too good to resist.

The fine folks at Standard Candy, loyal sponsors of the Grand Ole Opry,  have long been a featured product on our web site at www.dixiedining.com .  And every year about this time we receive a big shipment of their products at our home office. This, I might add, is always a highly anticipated event. The year we received a generous supply of what is known as the Goo Goo Supreme. Man, this Supreme is even sweeter than the singing of Diana Ross and the girls.

The Goo Goo Supreme is a spinoff of the original Goo Goo recipe and is made with Georgia Pecans, Caramel, Marshmallows, and Milk Chocolate. It’s an oooey, gooey bundle of joy … that is for sure! I can’t imagine a better stocking stuffer for youngsters sure to crave something sweet this Christmas. Just make sure Great-Grandma has her Fixodent handy before she attacks one of these babies. They’ll give your mandible a real workout.

Merry Christmas, all … now it’s time to get yourself some Goo Goo’s!

Can’t wait to try this recipe — found in Bon Appetit magazine.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons finely grated orange peel
  • 3 large eggs
  • 24 oz sweetened flaked coconut (about 6 cups firmly packed)
  • 6 oz bittersweet chocolate, melted

Preparation

  • Position rack in center of oven; preheat to 325°F. Line 3 large rimmed baking sheets with parchment. Using electric mixer, beat butter in large bowl until smooth. Add sugar and salt; beat until blended. Beat in orange peel, then eggs, 1 at a time. Mix in coconut. Drop batter onto sheets by tablespoonfuls, spacing 1 1/2 inches apart.
  • Bake macaroons, 1 sheet at a time, until golden on bottom and browned in spots, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool completely on sheets.
  • Using fork, drizzle chocolate over macaroons. Chill on sheets until chocolate is firm, about 30 minutes.

We recently made some new friends at Belmont Peanuts of Southhampton, VA. They kindly sent us a variety of their products for our review — and enjoyment! Let me tell you, everything they sent is delicious. Being a native Virginian, I couldn’t wait to tear open the vacuum packed pouch of Gourmet Virginia Peanuts. Belmont has obviously mastered the art of transforming ground peas into crunchy gourmet treats. These peanuts are big and extremely fresh and crunchy. Forget about the store bought Planters Peanuts, etc. There really is no comparison. Trust us!

brittle

We were thrilled to receive packets of Gourmet VA Peanuts, Redskin Peanuts, Butter Toasted Peanuts, Chocolate Covered Peanuts, BBQ Peanuts, and, last but not least, Chocolate Covered Peanut Brittle. The latter is truly our hands down favorite — and a great gift idea for the upcoming holiday season. You will be remembered all year long if you send your loved ones a tin of these delicious little morsels.

Thanks to Belmont Peanuts for their generosity. I look forward to enjoying their peanuts and singing their praises for many holiday seasons to come. But don’t wait another minute. Order yours now at www.belmontpeanuts.com
